Kolkata, 10 July, 2025: hoichoi, the leading Bengali OTT platf-orm, has unveiled the riveting announcement video of its upcoming original series Birangana — a gritty, emotionally charged crime thriller starring Sandipta Sen, seen in a trailblazing avatar and Niranjan Mondal, who makes his OTT debut, in lead roles. Directed by Nirjhar Mitra, this hard-hitting series is all set to start streaming on hoichoi from 25th July.
Set amidst torrential rain and a wedding house, the announcement video opens with a visceral visual — a lifeless bride lies in the middle of a shocked crowd, while Sub-Inspector Chitra Basu, played by Sandipta Sen, cuts through the chaos with silent fury. As a woman trying to assert herself within a patriarchal police force, Chitra’s journey is not just about solving murders, but confronting the societal rot that enables them.
The tension in the video builds steadily as Chitra walks toward the body, her face a portrait of simmering rage. Her voice is heard in the background, reflecting the horror of what she’s uncovering — brides being killed one after the other, each in the same pattern, as if following a brutal ritual. “What have these brides done?” she wonders aloud, the question hanging heavy in the rain-soaked air. Just when the grief feels overwhelming and the silence becomes deafening, a new presence emerges — shifting the atmosphere entirely. Among the onlookers, we catch a glimpse of Chirayu, portrayed by Niranjan Mondal — a quiet, brooding figure who lifts his umbrella ever so slowly, revealing a face steeped in mystery. His presence signals something far more sinister.
“Birangana is more than a crime drama — it is a confrontation of silences, of systems that suppress. This announcement video sets the tone for a story that is urgent, gripping, and deeply relevant,” said director Nirjhar Mitra. Speaking about her role, Sandipta Sen shared that playing Chitra Basu was an intensely personal experience — “She’s fierce, flawed, and constantly fighting a system designed to silence her. Birangana gave me the space to channel that fire.”
With its raw energy, arresting visuals, and complex characters, Birangana is poised to become one of hoichoi’s most compelling originals this year.
