This minimally invasive method involves the insertion of fine catheters through a vein to directly access and remove the clot, eliminating the need for open surgery and enabling faster recovery with fewer complications.
Manju Saha (name changed)a 77 year old woman from South 24 Parganas with high blood pressure and other health issues diagnosed with acute pulmonary thromboembolism, a life-threatening condition whereby clots migrate from the veins to the lungs. Due to her bleeding risk, conventional blood thinners were not an option. Instead, Dr. Arindam Pande used mechanical clot removal with the Penumbra Indigo® Aspiration System (an advanced mechanical thrombectomy device), which effectively “vacuumed” the clots out of the lung arteries. To prevent new clots from traveling to the lungs, the team also placed a temporary inferior vena cava (IVC) filter, a small net-like device inserted into a large vein in the abdomen to catch clots coming from the legs. Once her condition was stabilized and the risk was gone, the filter was safely removed. This approach saved her life, relieved her symptoms, and avoided the dangers of major surgery.
