Kolkata, June 12, 2026: Unmish by Dr. Nita Diwan, Kolkata’s leading center dedicated to
supporting children and individuals with special needs through education, therapy and care,
marked a significant milestone with the unveiling of its expanded five-storey center in
New Alipore on June 12, 2026. The occasion also witnessed the launch of dedicated
Hydrotherapy and Sports Programs, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to
delivering comprehensive and holistic support for people with diverse developmental needs.
Founded in 2009 by Dr. Nita Diwan, Unmish began as a mother’s vision to create a nurturing
and inclusive environment for her son and countless others requiring specialized support. Over
the years, the organization has evolved into a multidisciplinary center offering education,
therapy, vocational training, mental health services and developmental interventions
under one roof. The expanded center represents a major step forward in strengthening
access to specialized care and creating greater opportunities for inclusion, independence and
personal growth.
A key highlight of the expansion was the introduction of dedicated Hydrotherapy and Sports
Programs. Designed to enhance physical rehabilitation, motor development, confidencebuilding and social engagement, these facilities will provide individuals with special needs
access to structured therapeutic and sporting experiences in a safe and inclusive
environment. The initiative further strengthens Unmish’s integrated approach to neurorehabilitation and holistic development.
The celebrations commenced with the unveiling of the commemorative stone by Dr. Nita
Diwan, Founder and Director of Unmish, alongside Nikunj Diwan, North Star of Unmish,
whose journey has been the inspiration behind the organization’s inception and growth. The
venue was inaugurated by Dr. Mallika Nadda, President- Special Olympics Bharat (Delhi) in
the gracious presence of Padma Shri Sajjan Bhajanka, Chairperson, Century Plyboards;
Smt. Geeta Mandaviya- Chief Patron/Chairperson of the Gujarat Chapter of Special
Olympics Bharat (Delhi) and Sushil Kumar Goenka, Managing Director, Emami Limited
The dignitaries formally inaugurated the center and participated in the ceremonial lighting of
the lamp and other rituals, symbolizing hope, inclusion and new beginnings. The guests were
felicitated in recognition of their contribution towards promoting awareness and
opportunities for individuals with special needs. They later toured the facility and
experienced first-hand the wide range of services offered by Unmish, including education,
therapeutic interventions, vocational development, mental health support, sports training
and hydrotherapy.
As part of the celebrations, eminent guests participated in a Flower Urli ceremony, followed
by a commemorative cake-cutting ceremony alongside students, parents and members of the
Unmish community. The event concluded with a symbolic balloon release, representing
aspirations for a more inclusive society where every individual is empowered to realize their
fullest potential.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nita Diwan, Founder and Director of Unmish, said:

The inauguration marked another important chapter in Unmish’s journey of fostering
inclusion, dignity and opportunity for individuals with special needs, while reaffirming its
vision of building a society where people of all abilities can learn, grow and thrive.
